UTM parameters explained (2026 edition)
UTM parameters are how Google Analytics, Meta Ads, HubSpot and every marketing platform on Earth knows where your traffic actually came from. Without them, everything from social ads to email newsletters gets bucketed as "direct" or "referral", and you lose the ability to prove ROI on any campaign.
The five parameters
utm_source— the platform (google, meta, newsletter, partner-name)utm_medium— the channel type (cpc, email, social, affiliate, referral)utm_campaign— the campaign name (summer-sale-2026, product-launch)utm_content— the specific creative (banner-blue, cta-signup, footer-link)utm_term— the keyword (paid search only)
Naming conventions that scale
- Lowercase everything. "Facebook" and "facebook" are two separate rows in GA4.
- Hyphens, not spaces or underscores. Spaces become
%20and break email clients. - Standard mediums. Stick to Google's canonical values: cpc, cpm, email, social, referral, affiliate, display.
- Date your campaigns.

The QR code combo advantage
Every offline touchpoint — print ads, event banners, product packaging, business cards — deserves attribution too. Pair each URL with a QR code and you can measure the exact ROI of a poster placement or trade-show booth. This tool generates both simultaneously, keeping print and digital campaigns in the same spreadsheet.
