Password security in 2026 — what actually matters
Modern GPU clusters can guess ~100 billion passwords per second offline. Cloud-rented password-cracking rigs push that to trillions. The only defense: length + unpredictability. Complex-looking 8-char passwords like P@ssw0rd! fall in seconds; a random 20-char string survives all currently known attacks.
The 2026 minimums
- Regular accounts: 16 characters, mixed sets → ~104 bits entropy
- Financial / email: 20 characters → ~130 bits
- Password-manager master: 5-6 word diceware passphrase (~77-92 bits, memorable)
- Crypto wallets / root: 24+ characters → quantum-resistant range
Rules that no longer apply
NIST SP 800-63B (updated 2024) explicitly recommends against forced periodic password changes, mandatory character-composition rules, and password hints. The current guidance: long, unique, checked against known breach lists, never reused. Store them in a password manager — memorizing 50+ unique 20-char strings is impossible.
Enable 2FA on everything important
Even a perfect password fails if credentials leak in a database breach. Layer 2FA / TOTP backup codes on top, and use dedicated virtual numbers for SMS-based recovery to isolate your real phone from data leaks.
