Running a remote team across time zones
Remote and hybrid teams are the default in 2026. The single biggest productivity killer isn't tooling — it's mis-scheduled meetings that force half the team to join at 6 AM or 11 PM. This planner visualizes everyone's working hours as one grid so you can spot overlap windows instantly.
The three overlap windows
- Global (all-hands) — usually 1-2 hours a day exist worldwide; look for the widest green stripe.
- Regional pairs — US ↔ EU (13:00-17:00 UTC), EU ↔ APAC (07:00-11:00 UTC), US ↔ APAC (nearly impossible; async only).
- Async-first zones — anything requiring 3+ people across 3+ continents. Rotate meeting inconvenience fairly.
DST and offset gotchas
Never store meeting times as UTC offsets like "+05:00". Store them as IANA zones like Europe/Istanbul. Countries change DST rules unpredictably — Turkey abolished DST in 2016, Russia in 2011, most of Mexico in 2022. IANA zones handle these automatically; hardcoded offsets don't.
Reaching international users
Serving users in 180+ countries means every product notification, transactional email and SMS needs local-time awareness. If you send SMS verification codes, use country-local virtual numbers so codes arrive fast and appear trustworthy (local sender IDs get through carrier filters far better than international ones).
