In 2019 Google Voice could sign up for almost anything. In 2026 it fails on Uber, Tinder, OpenAI, WhatsApp, Cash App, PayPal, Coinbase, and most of the rest. The cause is a single boolean field: line_type.
How services detect Google Voice
Every incoming phone number can be looked up against a carrier-type database (Twilio Lookup, TeleSign, Prove). The lookup returns mobile, landline, or voip. Google Voice always returns voip. Services that block VoIP get one field to reject on, and Google Voice fails universally.
Why they block VoIP at all
- VoIP numbers can be created for free, in bulk, in seconds.
- Fraudsters and bot farms used them at scale from 2018-2020.
- Every major service tightened rules after WhatsApp's 2020 anti-fraud policy update.
Where Google Voice still works
Discord, Slack (mostly), some smaller SaaS apps, personal Gmail (if Google trusts your session), Signal. Everything payment-related or identity-critical: blocked.
What to use instead
